Chile One Mr Zambia has responded strongly to critics who have been mocking his appearance on social media, after a photo of him meeting President Hakainde Hichilema went viral. Many online users claimed the singer looked “shaggy” and “untidy” during the Youth Day event, where he was invited to perform.
The trending picture shows Chile One greeting President Hichilema at the national celebration. Instead of focusing on the honour of the moment or his performance, a section of social media users shifted the conversation to his looks, especially his beard, which some described as unkempt. What started as casual remarks quickly turned into full-blown mockery, with people questioning why a top artist would attend such a high-profile function without a more refined appearance.
Others used the situation to highlight a wider discussion around artist branding and management. Some suggested that Chile One should consider surrounding himself with a more structured team, including a stylist, image consultant, and public relations manager, to help manage his public image and how he presents himself at major events.
Supporters, however, have come to his defence, arguing that an artist’s appearance should not overshadow their talent, impact, or hard work. They pointed out that public figures are constantly under pressure and scrutiny online, and that criticism often crosses the line into disrespect.
In response to the backlash, Chile One made it clear that he is unfazed by the insults. He said he does not care about how people roast him online, as long as brands continue working with him and he and his loved ones remain comfortable. According to him, he chooses not to respond to online trolling not because he is afraid, but because he wants those behind the negativity to realise how unreasonable they are. He also emphasised that there is a more respectful way to communicate concerns if people genuinely care.
“My interest is making money. I’m comfortable where I am. If everybody who cares about me and is around me is comfortable like that… Who are you? Nobody!” he said.
Going live on Facebook on Saturday, the “Fwebaku Chaume” hitmaker appeared visibly irritated and stressed that he does not need validation from social media critics. He urged anyone who has a problem with him to block him, stop listening to his music, and stop attending his shows.
Chile One added that he fully believes in himself and his journey, and that all the noise online is only making him stronger by giving him more attention and engagement.
“I know who I am, I believe in myself. One day I’m gonna win, and I will tell you my story,” he said.
He further explained that insults from people he does not know personally do not affect him. To him, negative comments are just part of the game, and they are actually helping to grow his numbers.
“As long as I don’t know you, I don’t care about what you say. You are roasting me, but you’re giving me engagement and making my business stronger,” he added.
Chile One went on to boast that while some people think they are embarrassing him, they are in fact helping to increase his visibility and attract more opportunities.
“My interest is making money. You’re commenting on my post with your K2,000 worth of a phone while I’m using a phone worth K80,000,” he said, noting that the online drama is only boosting his engagement and income.
